Instead of suicide sprints and ball handling drills, the Springfield High School boys soccer team traded on-field practice for off-field service last week.
Taking advantage of a day great for painting, the boys descended upon Brown Memorial Field, taking on a set of neglected visitors bleachers, rollers and brushes in hand.
“The fans support us all season long, so we decided to return the support by painting the bleachers,” said Paul Kendall, long-time coach of the Cosmos soccer effort.
Kendall added that another crew of players were at the high school, sprucing up wooden sewer covers, the kick wall and the memorial rock, with the same Cosmos green coat of paint.
At left, I captured Karson Lewis, age 17, on a bunch of digital pixels, he’s a senior defenseman but he also laid down some mean Cosmos green with a paint roller.
For the Cosmos boys, the spirit and pride didn’t stop with a set of bleachers. Instead of painting planks and railings, one the same day, they left Springfield for Westminster.
Thanks to the combination of Nikon and Message sports editor Joe Milliken, six the letter-men, an unidentified human drumstand and a part-time Ringo Starr are illustrated in the photo below.
In support of the ladies Cosmos soccer team, the young men painted themselves – a six-pack of consonants and a couple of vowels – and cheered on their fellow soccer players as they took on the lady Terriers.
While the Cosmos used their talents on the field to shut-out the Terriers two-zip, you have to give credit to the drum-banging cheering crew off the field, sporting their coats of white and green.
Two examples of sportsmanship and community service, in one day, in two towns, Springfield and Westminster.
